National Community Service (PENGMASNAS) is one of the annual National Work Programs (PROKERNAS) by the Indonesian Veterinary Medicine Students’ Association (PB IMAKAHI). This year, UGM was choosen to be the host of this event. The event was held on 24-26 August 2018 in Klegung, Katongan Village, Nglipar District, Gunung Kidul Regency and was attended by delegates (Veterinary Medicine Students) from all over Indonesia.
Klegung, Katongan Village, has a Farm Group called by “Ngudi Rejeki” which consists of approximately 40 farmers and the total number of the cattle is at least 180. “Ngudi Rejeki” is one of the farm groups that have a high cattle population in Gunung Kidul.
This event was opened on Friday afternoon at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UGM by the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM and the acceptance of delegations by the Head of the Katongan Village in the Klegung Hall.
The next agenda is Animal Examination. The total number of cows examined at that time was 39 cows and several diagnoses were found, one of it was the Corpus Luteum Resistance (CLR), which was that the cow could not estrous because the corpus luteum could not be shed. This activity ended in the afternoon with a discussion session with the veterinarian about the case that were found. According to veterinarians from the Gunung Kidul Department, handling CLR cases is by providing additional prostaglandin hormones. The delegates were also give supportive treatment by giving vitamins and worm medicine to the cattle. The participants were expected to understand about the world of farm veterinarians and also gain more skills such as handling and restrain of the cow.
After that, there’s a discussion between the Government, Veterinarian, Veterinary Medicine Students’ and also the farmer in the Katongan Village. This discussion has two themes, with the first theme “Ruminants Food Safety ” delivered by the Director of Veterinary Public Health, drh. Syamsul Ma’arif M.Sc. He gave a message to the delegates “the veterinarians soon-to-be” that the task of veterinarians is not only to treat the animals, but also to be responsible for the animals health to become products that are ready and safe to be consumed by the public to become ASUH products (Safe, Healthy, Intact, Halal).
Followed by the second theme “Animal Reproductive System Health” which was delivered by drh. Erif Maha Nugraha, M.sc., Ph.D. a Lecturer of the Department of Reproduction and Obstetrics, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UGM. According to drh. Erif, some reproductive disorders that were found could be due to lack of feed. The total feed that must be given to the cattle is 10% of the cattle’s body weight. And food intake can only be allocated to reproductive needs after the needs of life and production needs are met. It is hoped that farmers can find out the factors that cause pregnancy disorders of the cattle.
The next agenda is an “Arts Night” with various performances from representatives of delegates and from the local residents.
To tone up this activity, on the next morning there are Sport Event and Door Prize that were enlived by the delegations and the local residents. There was also an educational activity called by PESAWAT (Pengenalan Hewan dan Satwa). PESAWAT aims to introduce the concept of Animal Welfare to local the childern of Katongan Village, so that they can treat animals in accordance with the five principles of animal welfare. The next event is Bazaar and Flea/Cheap Market. The items that were sold are groceries, clothes that are still in a good condition. There are also a stall from local resident who promote local-made beverages from aloe vera. This activity became the last activity in this National Community Service (PENGMASNAS) 2018.
The whole series of activities in this National Community Service (PENGMASNAS) 2018 aims to implement one of the Tri Dharma of University, which is Community Service and students are able to have a real impact on community life
