On Tuesday, January 16 2024, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine held a workshop entitled “Increasing the quality of Scenario for Small Group Discussion (SGD)”. This workshop aims to improve the quality of the scenarios, which are the focus of discussion during the SGD activities. On yesterday’s workshop, FVM invited Prof. Dr. Gandes Retno Rahayu, M.Med.Ed., Ph.D., the director of the Directorate of Education and Teaching, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event started at 10.00 AM and was attended by all of the FVM’s lecturers, and started with the Dean’s speech, Prof. drh. Teguh Budipitojo, M.P., Ph.D.

Small Group Discussions have been held at FVM since 2013. When conducting SGD, students are divided into small groups. They practice to think critically, analyze, and provide problem-solving ideas. In her presentation, Prof. Gandes explained the SGD class management strategy. She also compared the ideal situation (should) in the classroom, and the situation that actually occurs in the field (reality).

In the workshop, the duties and roles of lecturers as facilitators were reminded. Their role is to facilitate healthy, independent discussion. The facilitator is allowed to interrupt student discussions to correct misconceptions or ask for more detailed clarification of what students have said. In creating SGD scenarios, there are several formats and types that can be applied, namely description format, audio video format, strategy format, multi-level, and study practice.

The discussion was energizing with many questions and answers taking place among the lecturers. The questions asked were varied, but mostly, it involved the student’s learning atmosphere while attending SGD, to tips that could be carried out in class under certain situations. This workshop was held before the even semester 2023/2024. This workshop is expected to improve the quality of SGD meetings that will be held in the future.
