The opportunity to broaden academic and cultural experiences was once again embraced by four students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FVM UGM) through the Student Mobility 2026 program at the Joint Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Yamaguchi University, Japan, which was held from 7–16 July 2026. This program served as a platform for students to gain insights into Japan’s veterinary education system, enhance their academic knowledge, and establish international networks through various academic activities, practical sessions, and cultural exchanges.
During the first week, participants took part in a series of academic activities, including introductions to various laboratories at Yamaguchi University, such as Veterinary Hygiene, Veterinary Public Health, Anatomy, and Theriogenology. Participants also had opportunities to discuss research fields, learning systems, and the development of veterinary sciences with members of the Yamaguchi University academic community. In addition, students participated in practical sessions alongside undergraduate students of Yamaguchi University, including activities in Theriogenology, which provided valuable hands-on experience in applying knowledge that had previously been learned theoretically.
In the second week, activities focused on exploring veterinary healthcare facilities and field-based learning experiences. Participants visited Yamaguchi University Animal Medical Center (YUAMEC) to observe veterinary healthcare services, facility management, and clinical procedures firsthand. Students also had the opportunity to observe activities within the operating room and gain insights into the application of advanced technologies and facilities in supporting veterinary healthcare services. Furthermore, participants visited livestock facilities and a breeding center in Yamaguchi Prefecture to learn about the implementation of reproductive technologies and livestock management practices, including oocyte collection and bull semen collection procedures.
The Student Mobility 2026 program also provided students with opportunities to experience Japanese culture more closely. Through interactions with local students, lecturers, PhD students, and surrounding communities, participants gained a deeper understanding of Japanese cultural values, daily life, and the academic environment in Japan. The shared experiences throughout the program strengthened the relationship between FKH UGM students and Yamaguchi University while becoming a valuable opportunity to broaden global perspectives, enhance understanding of international veterinary education and practices, and establish international networks that support future academic collaborations. This program is expected to further strengthen the collaboration between FKH UGM and the Joint Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Yamaguchi University in the fields of education, research, and student exchange programs.
This program supports several Sustainable Development Goals such as SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 9 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, SDG 15 Life on Land, and SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals.
