Acupuncture on Pet Animal, Why Not?

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKH UGM) in collaboration with Indonesia Veterinarian Association of Chinese Traditional Medicine (ADHPTCI) has successfully held the “5th Session Acupuncture Workshop on Pets”. This activity is a form of collaboration that has been going on for the last 3 years between UGM FKH and Chi-Institute. The activity was held on 12-14 February 2019 at the Laboratory of the Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

In this year’s activity, there was a significant increase in the number of participants compared to the previous year. The country of origin of the participants is also more varied including from Canada, the Philippines, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Before the 5th session of acupuncture activities, the participants had undergone 1-2 sessions online, followed by wet labs, and final examinations.
This activity was opened by the faculty leader who appreciated the innovation of medication of pet animals by developing acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. The workshop activity began with a review of the material by the speaker drh. Tatang Cahyono, CVA and dr. Wirapongse Tangjitjaroen, CVA, Ph.D. continued with the wet lab on site with experimental animals in groups. On the last day, a practical and written examination was carried out to get the feasibility of animal acupuncture (Certified Veterinary Acupuncture) from the Chi Institute, Florida University.
This event as a whole went successfully and smoothly. This seminar and workshop are expected to be one of the media to increase veterinary knowledge and expertise in dealing with cases of neurological diseases and chronic diseases by combining conventional veterinary medicine and TCVM. The collaboration between FKH UGM and the Chi Institute will be developed further, especially in collaboration with international research and publications in the field of traditional Chinese medicine.(AY)
