Department of Biochemistry

  • Veterinary Medicine Higher Education which is now become the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM (FKH UGM) was established on September 20, 1946. The Higher Education is one of the pillars of the formation of Universitas Gadjah Mada which was established on December 19, 1946. The Chairperson of Veterinary Higher Education was held by Prof. Drs. M. Soeparwi. He was the Chairperson of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM in 1949-1962. Faculties incorporated in the Ngasem area consisted of the Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, Biology Faculty and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The Faculties area can only have one Department and one Professor. The Department of Biochemistry at Ngasem is managed by the Faculty of Medicine with the Head of Section Prof. Drs. Sardjono. Based on these conditions, Fakulty of Veterinary Medicine established a Section that did not explicitly mention Biochemistry, which was the Veterinary Medical Section consisting of the Clinical Chemistry, Toxology and Biochemistry Laboratory in 1952. The section existed until 1969.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry

In 1964 the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine become the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry. The Chairperson of the Veterinary Medicine Department of FKH and Animal Husbandry is held by Drh. Soesanto Mangkoewidjojo in the period 1964-1966, while the Chairperson of the Animal Husbandry Department was held by Drh. Saleh Poespo. On November 10, 1969 Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry UGM divided into the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Animal Husbandry. Some of the Veterinary Chemistry Department staff, equipment and activities moved to the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, while the Veterinary Medical Chemistry Department consisted of the new Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology and Biochemistry Laboratory at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM until 1978. In 1979 the Department of Biochemistry separated from the Clinical Section Chemistry, and since then Biochemistry courses have been taught by the Department of Biochemistry until now.

  • Laboratory Activity

In 1989 the Department of Biochemistry actively began to organize the practice and research in the Biochemistry Laboratory, at Sekip until 2004. Building aid and laboratory equipment from OECF starting in 2004 were patterned into Biochemistry and Biomolecular Laboratories located on the 4th floor of the New Campus, on fauna No.2, Karangmalang for academic activities, research and community service.

The Biochemistry Laboratory was developed into a Laboratory of Biochemistry and Biomolecular, serving Biochemistry practice of Regular and Self-help (swadaya) Undergraduate students, Chemistry practice students of Animal Health Diploma (D3) UGM and UGM research for undergraduate students in Biomolecular, Animal Feed, and for Master (S2) and Doctoral (S3) research.
