Tuesday, the 16th of January 2025, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM held Veterinary Inauguration Ceremony for 2024 December
After that, the next agenda was the submission of the 2024 Dean’s Report by Prof. drh. Teguh Budipitojo, M.P., Ph.D as Dean of FVM UGM. The theme raised by the 78th Anniversary of FVM UGM was “Transformation of the Veterinary Profession in Facing the Digital Era and the Development of Artificial Intelligence”.
Then the event continued with a Scientific Oration delivered by the Head of the Department of Surgery and Radiology, Dr. drh. Dhirgo Aji, M.P. with the title “Osteoarthritis in Dogs: Problems, Therapy, and Economic Impact on the Dog Owner Community in Indonesia”. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a musculoskeletal disorder that is often found in pets, especially dogs. Currently, osteoarthritis in dogs is the most common case of articular disease in Indonesia and other countries in Asia, Europe and even America. The impact of disrupting the welfare of animals suffering from OA is very clearly visible in symptoms of pain that are so severe that the animal walks lamely or is even unable to stand. (SDG 15 Life on Land)
In his speech, Dr. Dhirgo Aji explained the types of medicines used as therapy for dogs suffering from OA, as well as surgery that must be carried out if the condition gets worse. The type of medication used is Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory and surgical procedures include Total Hip Replacement and Total Knee Replacement. It is also important to note that these medical and surgical procedures require quite a bit of money. (SDG 4 Quality Education)
He also reminded owners of the importance of pet welfare. Pet owners must be physically, mentally and economically prepared to treat pets exposed to disease, especially OA, because this is a form of ensuring that animal welfare is met properly. (SDG 15 Life on Land, SDG 4 Quality Education)
Moreover, FVM UGM also gave incentives to outstanding students and their supervisors as a form of appreciation for their achievements such as academic and non-academic competitions. The 2024 Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Senate Open Meeting ended with the cutting of tumpeng (Indonesian traditional dish) as a celebration of the 78th anniversary of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada. (SDG 1 No Poverty, SDG 2 No Hunger)
The seminar was opened by Prof. Dr. Drh. Aris Haryanto, M.Sc, Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Alumni at FKH UGM. During this occasion, Aris mentioned that a Cooperation Agreement had been signed between FKH UGM and IDHSI, expected to align with SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals. “This seminar is the first of its kind and hopefully can continue in the following years due to the great enthusiasm of the participants and the need for updates on dairy cattle,” he said. This sentiment was echoed by PDHI D.I. Yogyakarta. “We highly appreciate and are proud of this initiative, as there have not been many seminars and workshops on large animals. This is a good breakthrough expected to improve the skills of veterinarians, especially in Yogyakarta,” said Drh. Romli Ainul Kusumo, Deputy Chairman II for Public Relations and Social Media PDHI D.I. Yogyakarta.
The blended seminar, attended by around 120 veterinary practitioners from various regions and some students, saw Prof. Richard discussing the intricacies of lameness in cattle. Although he used examples of lameness cases from his country, New Zealand, these cases are highly relevant and could occur in Indonesia, providing valuable lessons on how to handle lameness cases. In the second session, Dr. Deddy Fachruddin Kurniawan presented on the technicalities of hoof trimming, including tips and tricks for handling and restraining cattle for hoof trimming. This event is expected to indirectly contribute to achieving healthier and more prosperous lives (SDG 3) and maintaining better terrestrial ecosystems (SDG 15).
Participants were enthusiastic, as evidenced by the questions posed to Prof. Richard and Dr. Deddy. These questions opened up many lameness cases among cattle farmers in Indonesia. One of the seminar participants, Drh. Keki Riza Murty, a veterinary officer at UPTD RPH and Puskeswan, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Sukoharjo Regency, explained his reasons for attending the event. Among them was a desire to learn more about handling laminitis, given the high number of unresolved laminitis cases in Sukoharjo, where farmers often choose to sell their lame cattle. “From the material presented, I learned better methods for handling laminitis that I had never used in Sukoharjo,” he said.
The seminar was followed by a workshop at the Sarono Makmur Dairy Cooperative, Cangkringan, Sleman. During the workshop, Prof. Richard and Dr. Deddy, accompanied by Drh. Sunu, a lecturer from the Department of Internal Medicine FKH UGM, and Drh. Taufiq from IDHSI, demonstrated practical techniques for handling and caring for cattle hooves affected by lameness. Workshop participants were eager to try the techniques firsthand under the guidance of the speakers. Drh. Ruly, one of the workshop participants, stated that the workshop was comprehensive, covering both the material presented and hands-on practice, providing new and very useful knowledge.

This event took place from 06.30-16.30 and was attended by 16 mentors and 19 international students from Malaysia. The mentor system itself was created to help foreign students studying at Veterinary Medicine UGM to make it easier for them to mingle, both from an academic and non-academic thing. The mentors are chosen through a selection, and they will be responsible for the foreign students who become their mentees.
One of the mentees, Dhamirah, said “The activities held on 11th November 2023 were really fun. I enjoyed spending time with the seniors and got to know them more. Besides that, I finally had the opportunity to explore Yogjakartan’s cultures and tried new cuisines such as lodeh, sambal pete, gudeg and peyek during our visit at Jogan Gumelar, Borobudur.”
The activity begins with a self-introduction bonding packaged with games. The games created are not only entertaining, but also educational. The mentees were asked to guess the names of animals, organs, or places they encountered on campus. The spokesperson of this workshop is from the Center for Innovation and Academic Studies UGM, Dr. Irwan Endrayanto Aluicius S.Si., M.Sc. On this occasion, he delivered material regarding the basis of changes to the teaching module, and Learning Design using the Case Study Method or Project Based Learning.
The event was opened directly by the Deputy Dean I for Academic and Student Affairs, FKH UGM, Drh. Agung Budiyanto, M.P., Ph.D., and attended by all FKH UGM lecturers. Even with limited time, the workshop ran smoothly. After completing the presentation of the material, a discussion and QnA session was held with the workshop participants. After that, the template for the new learning module is presented so that each course can apply it well.
The innovation of creating new learning modules is hopefully able to make the knowledge, materials or references studied more easily accessible to all students. One of the criteria for the learning implementation process is to create a learning atmosphere that is fun, inclusive, collaborative, creative and effective; provide equal learning opportunities without distinction between educational, social, economic, cultural, language backgrounds, student admission, and students’ special needs, as well as providing learning flexibility for students.
Making this learning module is an effort to improve the quality of education, especially in the field of veterinary science. It is possible that this learning module can be used to provide more compact and structured knowledge to the wider community.
