FoVM UGM is the first university to receive a Grant for the Modern Closed House Layer from PT. Charoen Pokphand Indonesia

As part of strengthening the synergy between education and industry, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FoVM UGM), officially started the construction of the Teaching Farm Closed House Layer (TFCH) in Gunungkidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The construction of the closed house is a grant from PT. Charoen Pokphand Indonesia will then be used for learning, research, and technology development in modern animal husbandry, especially with a closed-cage system with the latest technology.

The first stone was put to symbolize the start of the construction. The event was held at the Smart Veterinary Teaching Farm owned by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM in Dengok Village, Playen District, Gunungkidul, on Thursday (5/15/2025). Present at the event included the President Director of PT CPI, Dr. (HC) Tjiu Thomas Effendi, S.E., M.B.A., Expert Staff of the Minister of Agriculture for Downstreaming of Livestock Products of the Ministry of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN Eng, Vice Chancellor for Planning, Assets, and Information Systems, Arif Setiawan Budi Nugroho., S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM, Prof. drh. Teguh Budipitojo, Ph.D., Deputy Regent of Gunungkidul, Joko Parwoto, S.E., M.M., and other related parties. The construction is targeted to be completed within three months.

In addition, the closed house layer is a modern cage system with a capacity of 5000 chickens. This coop is designed to optimize environmental conditions for laying hens (layers) where it regulates ventilation, temperature conditions, and humidity automatically. Furthermore, the automatic system also includes egg harvesting and selection, feed, drink, and disinfection operations, including waste processing using the latest robotic technology. This closed-house layer served as a learning medium, an industrial model in the poultry sector, and some are provided for research for students and lecturers. Hopefully, this close house will increase FoVM students’ interest and professionalism in entering the poultry industry.

“This is a breakthrough for the Faculty, as our effort to bring the students’ learning process closer to industrial scale activities in the poultry sector,” said the Dean of FoVM UGM, Prof. drh Teguh Budipitojo, Ph.D., in his speech. Prof. Teguh noted that FoVM UGM students’ interest in entering the poultry farming industry tends to be low. This condition also occurs in other faculties of Veterinary Medicine in Indonesia.

“As we know, students’ interest in undertaking the poultry world is decreasing. Not only at UGM, I have asked all the deans of veterinary medicine throughout Indonesia, and the condition is the same. As the chairman of the Indonesian Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Association (AFKHI), I asked for data, and it turned out that the enthusiasm for graduates to enter the poultry world was only around 15 percent, the rest mostly went to practice (animal clinics),” he said.

“When asked, 60 percent wanted to establish their clinic. Therefore, thank Mr. Thomas Effendi today for allowing UGM to receive this closed-house layer grant to provide a direct picture to students related to poultry activities, especially in the layer sector,” he added.

President Director of PT CPI, Thomas Effendi, hopes this collaboration can continue. He wants the facilities built not only to be symbols, but also to be sustainable without a time limit. “We hope this program can run well. Not only until the laying of the stone, until the construction is estimated to be three months, until the endless process,” he said. He also added that it is hoped that the built Close House Layer can provide students with an overview of the miniature world of the poultry business.

For your information, PT. CPI is a giant company engaged in the poultry sector. However, this company also focuses on the education sector. This company has been carrying out many educational programs since 1984. PT. CPI also has a special institution that focuses on education. Through this institution, PT. CPI has funded the education of 463 students from 23 universities throughout Indonesia. Meanwhile, the Expert Staff of the Minister of Agriculture for Downstreaming of Livestock Products of the Ministry of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN Eng said that the construction of the Closed House Layer is one form of commitment from the industry to advance education and community service in universities. “University, industry, and community collaboration are inevitable if we want to advance and develop the industry, including this livestock. Why? If calculated at the earliest, the gap between industry and universities is 10 years, and an average of 20 years. It could be that not every student has ever seen a closed house layer cage or laying hen,” he said. Therefore, he added that it must be encouraged because industry and universities need each other.

The Deputy Regent of Gunungkidul, Joko Parwoto, S.E., M.M., also expressed his appreciation to PT. CPI and UGM are responsible for constructing the Closed House Layer in Gunungkidul. He said, This is a strategic step for advancing education in Bumi Handayani. Laying the first stone for this development is a strategic step that will become a strong foundation in animal husbandry and veterinary education, especially in Gunungkidul. This event is not only a symbol of the start of physical development but also marks the start of a significant, meaningful collaboration between the world of education, industry, and society. I believe the synergy between FoVM UGM and PT CPI will bring sustainable benefits,” he said.
