Animal Welfare Focus in IndoPet Expo 2018

Is the 4th year of the IndoPet Expo event. After last year this activity succeeded in bringing 35,668 visitors in 3 days, this time Indo Pet Expo was held by the Executive Board of The Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association (PB PDHI) with PT Mavic Media Indonesia as an Event Organizer.

This year’s IndoPet Expo was held on 7-9 September 2018 at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD City, Tangerang, Hall 3 and 3A. As in previous years, this year the IndoPet Expo is still loved by various animal lovers communities who will provide performances and education to visitors, as well as various attractive games to visitors.

Recently the animal world has become “viral” after a lot of news from the mass media that mentions actions taken by humans towards animals, both wildlife and pets. Because of this many cases, Indo Pet Expo 2018 carries the theme “Providing the Best for Your Pets. Yes, We Care! ”As an expression of the commitment of the organizers who are determined to provide the best both the interests of the pets and their owners. It is also a hope that humans will be more concerned about animals, one of them is the Pets’ Adoption Corner of the Animal Shelters during Indopet Expo.

This activity also allowed visitors to bring their beloved animals, and of course before entering the exhibition area, medical check-ups were carried out in advance for pets by Veterinarians assisted by the CoAssistant Student of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

There is something different about IndoPet Expo 2018, a National Seminar on “Dog Meat” Trade in Indonesia was held with the title of the National Seminar on “Dog Meat” Trade in Indonesia, “A Multi-Sectoral Perspective and Legal Review” and at the end of the seminar, the activist, vets, and participants signed a banner to show their support that dog are a meat-producing animals, related to the risk of zoonoses and also in terms of animal welfare and ethics of dog.

In addition, there are also various interesting Talk shows and shows such as narcotics detection simulation performances by dogs who become “narcotics detection dogs” by BNN (Badan Narkotika Nasional) , there are also Rabbit contests with professional judges, reptile contests, cat contests, horse shows, and many other interesting contests and shows.

To celebrate the World Rabies Day which fell in September, Free Mass Vaccinations were also held for cats and dogs. This activity was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Food Security in the District Animal Health of Tangerang Regency, Veterinarians from PDHI Banten II Branch and also Veterinarians and the Co-Assistant Committee of the Indo Pet Expo, on the first day the enthusiast of the visitors were still low but on the second and third days the enthusiasm was increased and the vaccines stock can be spent.

This activity can be held successfully thanks to the support from various parties including from volunteer students who are members of IMAKAHI (Indonesian Veterinary Students Association). There were approximately 80 students who volunteered in this activity, these students came from various universities in Indonesia, from Syiah Kuala University (9), Bogor Agricultural Institute (27), Airlangga University (7), Universitas Gadjah Mada (15), Udayana University  (3), Wijaya Kusuma Surabaya University (8), Padjajaran University (1), Brawijaya University (10).

The volunteers were placed in various position, from assisting in Seminars, Ticketing, Center Stage sections (entertainment stage, as MC), Community Pet Health Check (Examination of animals from the Community that filled out the exhibition) and also Visitor Pet Health Check (Examination of visitors’ animals who will enter the exhibition area) and many other parts which are of course very helpful for the successfullness of this activity.

Indonesia has a lot of natural wealth, especially animal wealth. There are so many species of animals that are owned by Indonesia, there are also many Indonesian people who have a hobby to have pet animals, therefore this activity is expected to provide benefits for everyone, especially people who are related to animals such as veterinarians, students, equipment industries pet animals (Food, Clothing, Medical) and Animal Clinics.
